Mend your beloved items and add a bit of extra personality to your textiles!
In this workshop, we will cover a variety of hand and machine mending methods and teach you some basic stitches to repair your textiles - whether reinforcing a thinning area or patching up a hole, tear, or rip. Topics will include darning, fixing a button, adding patches, and visible mending including sashiko stitching.
Participants are encouraged to bring an item (or two) that needs minor mending (like pants with a hole in the knee, a sock, a knit sweater starting to unravel or missing a button, or a well-loved stuffed animal). We will discuss as a class which methods are favorable to the mend and which materials are best to use; then with guidance from the instructor and some stitch practice, participants will tackle their textiles. At the end of the class participants will have the knowledge necessary to fix their garment and will have made progress on their mend.
This course is designed for teens and adults with an interest in preserving garments or other fabric items in their home. All levels of experience are welcome.
